Legacy Center’s Leadership Team: NC 131 Legacy Project Proposal

Team Stand: We the Electrifying Leaders of NC 131 stand for Integrity, Love, and Infinite Possibility!

Our vision is to make a difference in this world for families and children. Given our tough economy, many families including young children have been left destitute and often homeless.
In order to reduce this great suffering of destitute families, in order to create a more equitable world, in order to empower those in great need, and in order to break the cycle of poverty that leads to diminished capacity to uplift themselves, we propose that we attend to the greatest current needs of Urban Ministries of Durham, a unique non-profit center that addresses these needs. Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD) is located at 410 Liberty Street, Durham, NC 27701.

Urban Ministries believes that no one should be without the basic needs of food, clean clothing and a safe place to sleep, regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or disability.
Every day, they provide food, clothing, shelter, and supportive services to neighbors in need. UMD plays a critical role in Durham’s continuum of care network as the primary point of entry to homelessness prevention, re-housing and emergency services for a large portion of the area’s homeless and poverty-stricken population.
Their programs are designed to:
Help prevent homelessness by providing food and clothing to offset living expenses and by referring guests to others in the community who may be able to provide additional help
Assist those who are homeless by providing emergency shelter, stabilization assistance such as recovery programs and medical referrals, and to help them connect with the resources that will enable them to return to stable housing as quickly as possible
Foster collaboration with community partners so that coordinated efforts can provide needed longer-term housing and supportive service needs; and
Offer support with dignity and compassion.

Miracles Happen At The Urban Ministries of Durham

    Text of Story
“Wow! I love the new “toys” we have in our kitchen…I wanna play, I
wanna play!… We’ve never gotten appliances that came with
    instructions and owners manuals before.”

These are some of the comments that brought joy to my heart this past
weekend as I worked with my team of Electrifying Leaders on NC 131.
Our vision was to provide brand new kitchen equipment, serving
equipment and outdoor equipment in the children’s play area at the
Urban Ministries of Durham. Our vision became a reality over the
weekend of October 29 and 30, 2011. Not only did we source new items,
we created a joy that I would have never imagined!

    The miracle of collaboration

As part of the NC 131 Legacy Center leadership team, we chose to meet the most
urgent needs of Urban Ministries of Durham, a homeless shelter and
rehab facility that serves 150-160 people daily. They provide over
500 meals daily which led to a great wear and tear of their kitchen
equipment. After reviewing their needs, we provided them with a steam
warmer, 2 steamers, warming cabinet, and a new long lasting play
ground set with a beautiful slide and swings as well as two new
    picnic tables.

I am amazed at what a small team of individuals can create just with
the intention of doing so. It was indeed a miracle of
    collaboration!!!
